Hey guys! I was working with someone today and they were asking me about light ratios. I admit, I am not the greatest at explaining the technical stuff sometimes unless fully prepared, BUT I found this video from a great teacher and photographer Mark Wallace, on youtube. I thought I would share this here for everyone to check out a really good explanation of light ratios. This is using a basic two light setup, and will give you a great idea at how to start using 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 etc, ratio setups. Using ratios gets more involved, like when adding hair light/kicker lights (which could look something like 8:1:2 and so on)...when more lights are added but I hope this at least helps give you an idea at where to begin.
